Took it slow on the first cook and did chicken instead of brisket. Good decision, and a very good first result.

AKORN® Kamado Grill with Cart, Ash

Had it loaded pretty heavily and still got even enough cooking that I did not need to rotate everything constantly.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

How is a Masterbuilt Gravity Series different from a pellet grill?

A Gravity Series uses real charcoal instead of wood pellets. You still get digital temperature control and app monitoring, but the heat and flavor come from charcoal. That gives you the convenience of a digitally controlled cooker with a more traditional charcoal profile.

Do I have to constantly watch the grill during long cooks?

No. Gravity Series models use a GravityFed™ charcoal hopper and DigitalFan™ to automatically maintain the temperature you set. Larger models can hold enough charcoal for extended cooking sessions, so you do not have to keep feeding the fire manually.

Can I control a Masterbuilt from my phone?

Many Gravity Series models are Wi-Fi/app enabled. The Masterbuilt app can be used to monitor and adjust grill temperature and monitor connected meat probes from your phone. You can also control the grill directly from its digital control panel.

How quickly does a Masterbuilt Gravity Series heat up?

It depends on the model, but current Gravity Series products can heat up surprisingly quickly. For example, Masterbuilt states that the Gravity Series 1150 can reach 225°F in about 9 minutes and 700°F in about 15 minutes.

Can I smoke and sear on the same Masterbuilt?

Yes. That is one of the biggest advantages of the Gravity Series. Models such as the Gravity 1150 operate from roughly 225°F to 700°F, allowing low-and-slow smoking, roasting, baking and high-temperature searing on the same cooker.

Do I have to throw away unused charcoal after every cook?

No. Masterbuilt specifically says you can insert the shutdown slides to cut off airflow and extinguish the charcoal. Any remaining charcoal can then be reused during your next cook.

Does the Gravity Series give real smoke flavor?

Yes. The system burns charcoal rather than pellets, and you can also use wood chunks alongside the charcoal when you want additional smoke flavor. Owners commonly cite the charcoal/smoke flavor as one of the main reasons they prefer the Gravity Series over pellet grills.

How much maintenance does a Masterbuilt require?

Regular cleaning matters, especially after fatty cooks. Empty the ash bucket, clean grease buildup and keep airflow paths clear. Some long-term owners specifically warn that accumulated grease can contribute to flare-ups when moving from low-temperature smoking to high-temperature grilling, so routine cleaning is important.

Are Masterbuilt Gravity Series grills reliable?

Many owners report years of successful cooking, while others report issues with controllers, switches, connectivity or other electronics. The cooking concept itself is widely praised, but because these grills use more electronics than a traditional charcoal grill, there are more components that can potentially require troubleshooting or replacement.

What warranty does Masterbuilt include?

Most Masterbuilt products carry a 1-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under proper assembly, normal use and recommended care. The original purchaser must keep proof of purchase and register the product. Some models differ, for example, the Gravity Series XT carries a longer limited warranty, so the exact product warranty should always be checked on its own PDP or manual.
